Tipping Around the World: A Traveller’s Cheat Sheet

Tipping is one of the most confusing parts of international travel. What is generous in one country is insulting in another. This guide distils the essentials so you can travel with confidence.

The three tipping cultures

Expected: In the USA, Canada, Mexico and South Africa, tips are a core part of worker pay. Budget 15–20% for restaurants.

Optional: Across most of Europe, the UK, Australia and Southeast Asia, service is included or wages are fair. Round up or leave 5–10% for great service.

Offensive: In Japan, tipping can confuse or insult. A sincere thank-you is the right gesture instead.

Cash or card?

In much of continental Europe and Asia, card machines do not prompt for tips — carry small notes and coins so you can tip the people who rely on it.
